The Animal Shelter Inc of Sterling, MA has immediate openings for 2 to 4 eight hour days a week for permanent PT and/or FT doctors (we are also looking for relief doctor/s to add to our list for coverage when needed) to join our growing team. We are a non-profit no kill animal shelter with an on-site high volume, high quality, s/n clinic (HQHVSN) and also promotes and supports pediatric spay/neuter. Our shelter/clinic are conveniently located in Central NE just outside of Worcester - less than an hour from CT - NH - RI - Boston) - we have an EXCITING opportunity for 1 or more doctor/s to join our growing team.
Currently our clinic is open (4) ten hour days a week - Monday-Thursdays 8 am-6 pm (due to a high demand - great need for affordable s/n in our area and limited resources for pets/owners), we are adding Fridays to our schedule. Adding Friday to our schedule would change our hours to 8-4 or 9-5 (again we are very flexible). We have a doctor working Wednesdays now, so we are looking for doctor/s to cover M-T-Th and Fridays.
Position Requirements:

Education: Graduation from a university or college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor degree. Licenses and Certification:
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
DEA license for controlled substances.
Bonus if candidate has had Humane Alliance training for HQHVSN • If not trained At Humane Alliance in N.C. would plan to attend if needed.
Should review and have a strong understanding of the HQHVSN high volume s/n clinic model

This position will allow a veterinarian to enjoy the reason you became a veterinarian - your love of animals and the ability to help them! Our doctor/s have minimal one on one with individual clients, phones, emails, etc. This position is a great opportunity to simply practice medicine and perform surgeries while helping animals in ways you can't always do in private practice. This is a perfect position for a doctor/s looking to pick up additional days (of surgeries all while refining your surgical skills and speed) on a permanent part time or full time basis.

Our shelters on-site clinic offers our doctor/s incredibly talented hard working support staff, supported by CVT's - tech assistants and admin staff daily who maintain and exceed high quality protocols/procedures and who support our many unique programs!
Our IDEAL doctor/s will have:
Excellent surgical skills - safely and with speed • (we average 20-40 cat/dog s/n daily) w/ ability and skill/knowledge to perform pediatric s/n (for doctors with surgical experience looking for tips/tricks on HQHVSN we have a Wednesday doctor willing to work with you on increasing speed/safety based on the Humane Alliance program
Bonus for ability to s/n other common shelter animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, etc)
Potential skills and knowledge of HQHVSN or Humane Alliance/ASPCA's high volume high quality model a bonus -If not, willingness to spend time watching the videos, website and in-house training on Wednesdays.
Provide medical care to shelter animals, spay/neuter, performing exams/rechecks, health certificates, humane euthanasia if needed (though we euthanize less than half of 1% of the animals coming through our clinic)
Updating necessary medical records
Providing high quality affordable s/n to other non-profits, shelters/rescues/ACOs/general public including voucher program candidates
Ability to perform minor surgeries and procedures such as eye entropian, cherry eye, dentals, dewclaw removal, heartworm treatment and other minor surgeries such as mass removals etc..
An out-going personality who treats our clinic technicians / support team and shelter staff with respect and kindness. They will go out of their way to help our doctor/s with anything and we believe they should be treated with respect and kindness.


Works with Director and head tech to determine treatment plans and protocols that are aligned with the shelter and clinics mission while being conscious of financial constraints
Provides patient care for shelter pets, other shelters/rescues/ACOs and public animals including spay/neuter, vaccine clinics and other programs or events throughout the year.
Performs surgeries, including dentals, on all species. Prescribes treatment for sick or injured animals waiting for adoption
Reviews medical conditions of animals and provides treatment/s for adoptable pets as needed
Provides follow-up care or treatment to pets being fostered or sick animals as necessary.
Works alongside shelter and clinic team in maintaining herd health.
May require euthanasia based upon an animals physical or behavioral condition and Performs humane euthanasia if needed (we are fortunate that we have less than 1% euthanasia rate for the past 5 years)
Oversees controlled substances in accordance with regulation.
As needed - discuss pet/s medical issue via telephone to shelter and/or clinic staff
As needed- recheck sheltered animals, including those that may be isolated or quarantined for signs of illness and provides medical action as required
Accurately maintains records and daily paperwork, including computer records and other routine documents.
Attends shelter/clinic events, as required, such as staff meetings, vaccination clinics, special programs for s/n etc.
As needed communicates with and assists other animal welfare partners of the shelter
Complies with the Animal Shelters Employee Handbook.
As needed - shares ideas and suggestions designed to improve the shelter/clinics ability to save money, generate revenue.
Performs other duties as assigned. Generally items/ideas from the Humane Alliance data


Works with head tech and/or Executive Director to train, assign or direct the daily work of staff performing or assisting with veterinary duties or procedures.
Provides professional and technical guidance to shelter/clinic staff as needed • treating all staff, volunteers, clients w/ respect and compassion.
Maintains good relationships with community veterinarians and our partnerships with our primary vet partner hospitals.
Works with head vet tech to oversee clinic staff
Expected Knowledge:
Reviewing the Humane Alliance info and Veterinary Standards of Care which help high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinics maintain the most effective and humane practices as they perform their lifesaving services
Surgical procedures for spaying and neutering pediatric felines and canines (generally 8+ weeks and 2 lbs).
Surgical procedures for surgeries including but not limited to amputation, enucleation, and mass removal.
Understanding of Shelter medicine and best practices and the information in this document is extremely detailed and helpful - The Association of Shelter Veterinarians 2016 Veterinary Medical Care Guidelines for Spay-Neuter Programs
Knowledge and understanding how to effectively treat in-house the most common diseases and injuries we deal with (from URI • mange • parvo • ringworm • dental disease -heartworm)
Additional requirements
Confident working as the only doctor and working with minimal supervision - Must be self-motivated.
Requires working under pressure with patience, (we like to think of it as controlled chaos) with a strong support staff to provide assistance and support. Understanding sometimes the doctor may have to stop and re-direct focus of the day w/ understanding.
Requires tolerance, tact, and demonstrable compassion when working with staff and pet owners expressing a wide range of strong emotions, including anger, grief, frustration, and joy.
Must be flexible regarding the work environment and both shelter and clinic goals and programs.
As needed requires communication with shelter/clinic staff and if needed to speak clearly to clients and co-workers; and to answer medical questions for staff.
Our clinic provides a GOLD STANDARD of shelter medicine • a good understanding and knowledge of shelter medicine, vaccine protocols and overall herd health and management.
Preferred by not required:
Prior experience in high volume spay/neuter surgeries or Humane Alliance or HQHVSN clinic setting or Knowledge and training in HQHVSN similar to Humane Alliance/ASPCA's high volume high quality model
Rabbit s/n a bonus • learning to do these surgeries encouraged for rabbits surrendered.
Familiar with ClinicHQ software • we just purchased this for the clinic and are in the process of learning to set it up so it can be a new time-saving tool for the clinic and doctors.
